Abstract
The serum AFP was measured in 180 patients hospitalized at Busan National University & Busan Gospel Hospital during the period of June 1973 to November 1974.
Case materials were consisted of 72 cases of primary hepatoma, liver cirrhosis(31 cases), acute hepatitis (22 cases), chronic hepatitis(11 cases), secondary hepatoma(7 cases), gall bladder carcinoma(6 cases), liver abscess(6 cases), pancreatic carcinoma (5 cases), choriocarcinoma (one case) and normal adults (20 cases).
The results were as follows:
1. Among 72 cases of primary hepatoma, AFP was positive in 36 of 72 cases(50, Ova), and among 32 cases of histologically confirmed primary hepa-toma, AFP was positive in 17 cases(53; 1%) while with those clinically diagnosed (40 cases) it was positive in 19 cases (47.5%).
2. All of the other diseases including liver cirrhosis, acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, etc. revealed negative AFP.
3. Incidence of positive AFP among primary hepatoma patients was higher in younger than in older age and was higher in male than female.
4. The positive serum AFP revealed higher in primary hepatoma patients with liver cirrhosis than in those without liver cirrhosis.
5. The relationship was not seen between size of cold area on liver scintigram and results of serum AFP in primary hepatoma patients.
6. The positive serum, AFP revealed higher in poorly differentiated hepatoma than in well differentiated hepatoma.
7. The relationship was not seen between physical signs including laboratory findings and results of serum AFP in primary hepatoma patients.
